THE BATH HALF MARATHON FUND

The Bath Half Marathon Fund was established in 2003 to distribute grants to smaller local charities & voluntary groups within Bath & North East Somerset using funds generated from optional donations generously made by runners at point of entry to each year's race. The simple expediant of adding a box for optional donations on our entry forms has touched runners' imaginations & generated significant funds for local good causes

Runners' donations are distributed via the Quartet Community Foundation through grants for sports, active lifestyle and play-based projects targeting disadvantage or rural isolation in the Bath and North East Somerset area. As a registered charity, Quartet are able to reclaim tax on runners' donations made with the benefit of gift aid declarations

Community Foundations are a national network of govenment backed charities channelling funds from businesses into each local authority area. Quartet manages & distributes funds from a number of private & public businesses & also distributes funds on behalf national fundraisers, such as the National Lottery & Sport Relief. In addition they also provide valuable support on funding sources & financial management for smaller local charities

In the last 7 years, thanks to the generosity of half marathon entrants, over £73,000 has been distributed by the Bath Half Marathon Fund to over 70 different local charities & voluntary groups within Bath & North East Somerset

Since 2007 surplus donations have been invested in an endowment fund under Quartet's management, which since 2008 Quartet have been able to match with 50% funding from central government under the Grassroots scheme. The endowment fund is designed to increase runners' donations using the Grassroots scheme & to provide a permenant source of future revenue grants, allowing future runners donations to be used for other funding purposes

In the last 3 years a further sum of just under £100,000 has been invested in the Bath Half Marathon Endowment Fund

'We see the Bath Half Marathon Fund as a way to invest directly in local communities and help groups who are too small to benefit as official race charities. It’s also a great opportunity for race participants to give directly to projects for local residents, as a thank you for their support for this annual event. Every year I’m amazed to see what a difference relatively small amounts of money can make to local organisations and projects targeting deprivation & rural isolation' Andrew Taylor - Race Director
